Domke Plaza at the Sundial Bridge

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the completion of the SunDial Bridge by famed architect Santiago Calatrava, Trilogy was commissioned by the McConnell Foundation to design Domke Plaza, a project designed to honor Don and Doreeta Domke’s lifetime of service to the north state community. Located at the south end of the bridge, Domke Plaza features a curved concrete and glass bench area surrounding a sculpture presented by the bridge designer Santiago Calatrava to the Foundation in 2004.  The plaza features concrete benches by artist Ron Black using embedded recycled glass, and features a dramatic curvilinear nighttime lighting scheme. The plaza is a popular central gathering area for visitors to the bridge, Turtle Bay Exploration Park and the McConnell Arboretum.

The focal point of the plaza is a bronze sculpture that was a gift to the McConnell Foundation from the SunDial Bridge’s designer, the famed architect Santiago Calatrava.

The Challenge

The iconic Calatrava SunDial Bridge is a tourist favorite. The Domke Plaza needed to both honor the lifetime service of Don and Doreeta Domke, showcase a sculpture that was a gift from Calatrava to the Domke’s, as well create an elegant and timeless place for taking in the surrounding scenery and majestic bridge. The resulting design is a compliment to all and a favorite of visitors to take photos, relax and reflect.
