Contemporary Craftsman Residence
Our core competency is that of collaboration and sustainability – we love the challenge of conforming our vision to the aesthetic of any prospective client. In this case it was the style of the American Craftsman architecture popularized in the early 20th century. Sustainability was central in this home that became only the second LEED certified home in Shasta County. Ultra high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, lighting controls and solar power have been combined with the more traditional concepts of deep roof overhangs, site orientation toward indirect sunlight, and drought tolerant planting. As is the case with all of our residential design projects, sustainability and style are harmoniously represented.
Because the northern California climate has extreme fluctuations of temperature, we minimized our exterior timber accents and placed them in protective areas shielded from the weather, offset by more resilient stucco and stone. We saved the wood accents for the lush interior where we could create a rich and layered texture throughout the space.
The Challenge
Creating a design that was focused on sustainability that could also reflect a strong design perspective. Despite the harsh climate fluctuations we were able to create a design that was faithful to the American Craftsman inspiration that would be both highly resilient and sustainable.
