A Compact Classroom

Princeton Day School

This private coeducational day school, serving students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, approached us with a unique challenge. Founded in 1899, the New Jersey school was looking to upgrade twenty-four of their older classrooms to new technology, while maintaining the feeling of historical tradition so valued in their campus architecture. Our challenge came from the need to accommodate various seating arrangements of sixteen students in what anyone would consider very small classrooms. We surprised them by suggesting they only build one classroom as a prototype, and wait on any major further renovation until that was evaluated. New indirect lighting and technology were complemented by wood veneer sliding whiteboards and tablet recharging stations. The furniture was selected to be flexible in various arrangements, with finishes to match the classroom. In the end, the client only needed to “tweak” our design slightly for the remaining classrooms, in response to the teacher and student input.
