Upon relocating to northern California, this client – after much searching – was excited to find a piece of property right on the Sacramento River. Presented with a special site and a wish list of materials that center around wood, glass and natural river rock, two goals were made very clear by our client: first, create an interior environment that is both spacious in size and intimate in feeling; and second, create a grand window from that space looking out onto the river. We achieved the first goal by wrapping open web wood trusses with finished wood, and creating clerestory windows to allow natural light through those trusses into all interior spaces. Exterior stone columns transition to interior stone columns, ending with a massive stone fireplace in the central living area. And finally, a large expanse of glass is designed to look not just across the river, but to take advantage of the views both up and down the river, with electrically operated shades to protect from the harsh afternoon summer sun. This was a successful collaboration between architect and client from beginning to end.
