When this new client told us they were living in a converted barn on their ranch property, we have to admit we were intrigued. Then they said they wanted their new home to be a contemporary version of that barn, and we were hooked. What does that look like? We used their preferred structure material of steel, and created exposed trusses to span a wide open – and flexible – interior living, dining and sleeping area. Also key to the program was that their ”barn house” open completely to the outdoors and a new swimming pool. But all this desire for openness came with the caveat that the new home needed to be protected from a sometimes buggy climate. We solved this by incorporating into the design a completely screened porch adjacent to a living area with horizontal rolling screens that could disappear into the walls when not needed. Although never built, the client was thrilled with our design solution.
