How does an architect end up designing a garden?
We like to think in this case it’s because we are “generalist” architects who are viewed more as problem-solvers than specialists in any one type of design. Our task with this project was to work with a dedicated group of local garden enthusiasts to revise a previous design by others that was significantly over budget, without sacrificing the original vision. The concept for the gardens thus evolved through many, many discussions, not all of which ended up in agreement. Yet, the final result features an inspired landscape design by Mark Holland of Holland Garden Design, wrapping around environmental art pieces such as “The Sounds of Water” by Betsy Damon and the “Mosaic Oasis Fountain” by Colleen Barry. The buildings were necessarily designed as a background to the landscape, and that was just fine with us. And yes, the final project came in under budget.
