There are a lot of different ideas about what constitutes the best office environment for the 21st century, but one fundamental question remains – should it be open and public, or closed and private? In our studio, we need both privacy AND the ability to easily interact with each other. So we created a mostly open and flexible environment, and then added what we call “design caves” as closed spaces where privacy could be maintained when needed. Our office has far more places to meet together than the typical office. Most importantly, an architect’s space should be inspiring to those who work there as well as those who visit, so we centered our individual work areas around a large central atrium filled with natural light and contrasted with the bold colors that are a signature of our design work. After all, an architect’s own space is the first introduction to our clients – it is after all, who we are.
