In order to minimize the impact of the 18,000 square foot building on the adjacent neighborhood, this concreate and steel structure was designed to be cut deeply into the existing slope. An adjustable canvas and steel shade canopy was inserted along the street frontage to counter the typical image of a maintenance building.

Our project received the 2002 Honor Award from the Central Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Following are the juror comments:
“Very fine work; a mundane commission that became an excuse for making a memorable place. In the hands of lesser architects this would have become the kind of building that we drive by without seeing. The closer I looked, the more I admired this project for its intelligence, inventiveness, and beauty. The playful and intelligent mastery of the various building components elevate the mundane functions of the facility to a higher level. A worthy accomplishment.”
